Alfalfa overdose?

I have a friend who is taking 40 alfalfa tablets a day. Are there possible side effects from taking this much, since the bottle says not to take more than 10 per day?

There are some possible side effects of ingesting large amount of alfalfa seeds.

Too much alfalfa can produce an enlarged spleen and a deficiency of the cell elements of blood (called pancytopenia). Overdosing on alfalfa seeds or sprouts may also induce lupus.

However, alfalfa tablets sold in stores generally contain alfalfa leaves, not seeds or sprouts. Leaves are considered very benign and safe. To be cautious, and because he’s taking so much, it would be prudent to do routine blood tests — a CBC and a chem screen — just to be extra sure.
