No Alcohol?

Some of you may wonder why, at Jorjette, we don’t carry alcoholic beverages. After all, with organic wine and other “healthy” alcoholic drinks on the market, what’s the harm? Well, even though we’re sure there’s a lot of profit to be made in pandering to the misconception that alcohol is part of a healthy lifestyle, we can’t in good conscience sell you anything that is harmful to your health, no matter how profitable it might be.

The fact is, alcohol is one of the strongest, most addictive drugs you can buy – either legal or illegal. Though our culture tends to endorse the use of alcohol, that doesn’t mean it’s good for you. Many of the periodic “scientific” studies that promote the use of alcohol are hardly unbiased – one such prominent study was funded by the Canadian brewing industry. Even in studies without such an obvious bias, often the researchers themselves are alcohol uses, and as Dr. Andrew Weil puts it, “Users have an unconscious need to legitimize the drugs they choose to take.”

In his book, “Natural Health, Natural Healing,” Weil further states, “Alcohol is poisonous to nerve and liver cells and irritating to the upper digestive tract and urinary system; in women it may be a significant risk factor for breast cancer…Alcohol addiction produces serious disease with irreversible damage to the liver and nervous system.”

At Jorjette, we care about your health. If you choose to use alcohol in moderation, then that is up to you. But whatever the reason you may have for using alcohol, we hope you will consider that there are many other healthier alternatives. For example, if you use alcohol to relax, try a yoga or meditation class. Or simply try a natural calming herb, such as soothing chamomile tea.

Alcohol actually interferes with restful sleep, so try regular exercise (especially in the early evening) if you have a difficult time falling asleep at night. For fun and socializing, there are an infinite number of alternatives. A group hike, ocean kayaking expedition, or just an evening out with friends can be twice as much fun without the morning hangover. Get high on life! It’s more fun, and it’s better for your body.

Best Wishes in the New Year,

Your Friends at Jorjette
