Prevent Aches with Calf Stretching

Proper warm-up and stretches

My friend and I started walking about two weeks ago. We do a few stretches prior to the workout. However, after about the third lap, we both have pain in our outer calves. It is so painful we usually have to stop, stretch again, and then continue. Do you have any suggestions as to how to stretch that muscle prior to the workout so we can avoid the aches?

First of all, start warming up by walking before you do your stretching. Stretch out after about 10 minutes of walking, when your muscles are warm. It sounds to me like you are trying to do too much too soon. Warm up slowly and stretch, then continue walking at a comfortable pace.

Also, are you walking on a track? Sometimes tracks are not flat, and you end up pulling the muscle on one side of the calf, leading to pain. If you’re walking on a slanted surface, try changing directions every lap to even out the pressure on your calves.
