Growing Outdoors – 3 Hours? 4 Hours? But I work all day…

So you work all day and can’t bring your plants in at the proper time? Welcome to the club! Do you have a Sun Map? This is described in my [Garden Planning section]. If you read and followed my advice you need only look at the map to see where to place you plants to get two, three or whatever hours of sunlight per day. It’s as simple as that!

You didn’t make a Sun Map? Then improvise. During the first weekend of hardening off spend some time watching the sun and its shadows. Find some spots that are sunlit 2, 3, and so forth hours so you can utilize them in the coming days. If you don’t see any then make some. I’ve used a couple trash cans with great success in the past – they block light effectively in spring when the sun is still low in the sky, and it is easy to regulate sun exposure by adjusting the gap between two cans placed between the plants and the sun.

Be creative. And if you’re unsure than also be conservative. Hardening off is not a race, so take your time.
