Function:
Butchers broom is commonly used as a circulatory tonic and anti-inflammatory agent for a wide range of vascular problems.

Uses:
* Taken as a mildly bitter tea, butchers broom helps circulation to the limbs and reduces the chances of post-surgical thrombosis or blood clotting.
* It has a mild diuretic action, which is helpful in the reduction of swelling of the legs, particularly for people who are on their feet all day long.
* It is believed to be useful in the treatment of varicose veins and phlebitis.
* It eases the pain and swelling of rheumatism and arthritis.
* Used as a suppository it has found to be beneficial for the treatment of hemorrhoids.
* It is recommended for menstrual problems, pregnancy cramps and estrogen related problems.
* It has been reported that butcher’s broom when combined with black or green leaf tea may improve inhalation and exhalation, which can greatly benefit bronchial asthma.
* Butcher’s broom raises blood pressure, which is beneficial for treating chronic hypotension.

Guidelines:
Butcher’s broom is available in capsule form, herbal tea, topical ointment and suppositories.

Interactions:
Consumption is not recommended in the presence of hypertension or during pregnancy as it may increase uterine contraction. People taking MAO (a drug for treating depression) should not take butchers broom as this combination may lead to an unfavorable effect on blood pressure.
