My son is 13 months old. He seems to be developing normally but he is not walking yet. He likes to cruise but he just does not want to walk. Is this normal?
If he is cruising, he is walking! He’s just not walking by himself yet. Cruising (walking and holding on to furniture or other stationary objects) provides the opportunity for real practice. As soon as a child feels confident in his skills, he’ll be able to let go of the furniture and move about independently.
The age range of “normal” for walking is quite broad: children typically walk alone sometime between 9 and 17 months of age, with the average being about one year. Your son is thus well within the normal range.
Remember, too, that some normal children will walk alone before the age of 9 months or even after 17 months.
