Exercising When Injured

Last week I slipped on ice and landed on my back on concrete steps. I was taken to the emergency room on a back board. Luckily, I didn’t break anything, but my lower back and left kidney are badly bruised and my muscles hurt a lot. After the soreness is mostly gone, what would you suggest in the way of exercise? I have a treadmill, ski machine and exercise bike.

Exercising When Injured

I would speak to your doctor before you start exercising. My guess is she’ll recommend the treadmill. The bike will probably make you uncomfortable just because you’re sitting down. The ski machine might prove to stressful because it requires you to use some upper and lower back muscles to work the arm handles. But the treadmill should be fine.

I recommend testing it out with short walks so you don’t wake up the following day with more pain than when you started. When you’re comfortable walking for a half hour on the treadmill, you can probably rotate in the other equipment for a more varied workout. Aren’t you lucky to have all those choices!
