Extending Compassion

“Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.”
– Albert Schweitzer

What separates us humans from animals is our higher intelligence. And with that higher intelligence comes a higher responsibility of rational thinking and compassion. How a human being exercises that responsibility in relation to his rational thinking and compassion is the defining factor of the human species. If our hearts are favored to only those living beings we know and can relate to like our pets and fellow humans, then our compassion is not complete. We should be consistently compassionate towards all creatures, and not be selective, but rather have generosity for all life, all the time. And as we practice this compassion, which is intrinsic to our nature, the peace within ourselves will begin to blossom.

How a human being exercises that responsibility in relation to his rational thinking and compassion is the defining factor of the human species.
