GINGER calming effect to the stomach

Function:
Ginger contains pungent constituents that have a calming effect to the stomach, which helps reduce symptoms of nausea and vomiting. Ginger also has powerful antioxidant and warming properties.

Uses:
* Traditionally ginger has been used for digestive problems such as bloating, vomiting, nausea, diarrhea and other conditions such as arthritis, rheumatism and coughing.
* More recently ginger has also been used for hot flashes, atherosclerosis, circulatory problems, symptoms of cold and flu, headaches, minor skin inflammations, indigestion, motion sickness, bowel disorders, morning sickness, fever, minor burns, as a chemotherapy support and to stimulate digestion.
* In aromatherapy ginger is used for joint and muscle pain, digestive problems, poor circulation, travel sickness and nausea.

Guidelines:
* 4 – 12 mg of ginger powder can be used as a preventative measure. Up to 1 g daily in divided doses may be used for specific incidences of nausea. Motion sickness may be avoided by taking ginger up to two days before the trip.
* Ginger tea is an effective treatment for digestive problems and symptoms of colds and flu. Use slices of fresh ginger in water and boil for about 5 – 10 minutes. Ginger blends well with other herbs.
* Ginger may be used with carrier oil (3 – 5:100) and massaged onto the body, or in a warm compress for muscular and joint pain, poor circulation and for digestive problems such as diarrhea, flatulence, colic and stomach cramp.
* Ginger oil can be inhaled undiluted for nausea and used in a warm bath (10 drops) to warm the extremities.
* A few drops of ginger oil can be used in the ear to soothe the pain of earache.
* Fresh ginger juice can be applied directly onto the skin for minor burns and skin inflammations.

Interactions:
* Large doses may cause stomach irritation.
* Long term use of ginger during pregnancy is not recommended.
* If you are due for surgery, please inform your surgeon that you take ginger supplements.
* Check with your nutritionally oriented physician before taking ginger supplement if you suffer from gallstones.
* When massaging the abdominal area for digestive problems, always massage in a clockwise direction.
