HORSE CHESTNUT

Parts Used:
Seeds, leaves, bark.

Function:
The active constituent in horse chestnut improves the tone of the smooth muscle in the veins and improves venous circulation.

Uses:
* Traditionally horse chestnut was used for treatment of skin cancer or ulcers, arthritis and rheumatism, for fevers, coughs, hemorrhoids, phlebitis (blood clots in a vein) and to improve venous circulation.
* Today it is used for treatment of sports injuries, sprains, swelling, varicose veins, skin ulcers, water retention, hemorrhoids and to improve venous circulation.

Guidelines:
* In gel form hawthorn can be applied to the local area as required. When taken internally use according to label instructions.
* Horse chestnut can be combined with witch hazel for varicose veins and hemorrhoids.

Interactions:
* Large doses of horse chestnut taken internally have been known to cause kidney damage.
* Avoid horse chestnut if you have kidney or liver disease.
* Do not take horse chestnut internally during pregnancy and lactation.
* In rare cases horse chestnut may cause allergic reactions.
