Onions for Your Guy

People in the Netherlands who say ja to at least half an onion a day have half the risk of stomach cancer as those who say nee to any onions at all, a new study shows. The average onion in the Netherlands is about the size of a golf ball … so half an onion isn’t much.

Scientists think the pungent sulfur compounds in onions attack infamous stomach bacteria called Helicobacter pylori that are believed to cause ulcers … and quite possibly stomach cancer. (Previous studies in Hawaii, China, Poland and Italy have noted the same protective link to onions.)

Tip: Though stomach cancer isn’t a major cancer in the United States, men succumb at more than twice the rate that women do. So a little onion breath in your man might not be such a bad thing at all!
