Q: Do you know of any good treatment–natural or otherwise–that works for recurrent cold sores?
In my opinion, the best treatment for cold sores is a special cream containing a concentrated extract of the herb Melissa officinalis, sold in the United States under the brand name Herpilyn.
Melissa officinalis is a member of the mint family that exerts powerful antiviral activity against the herpes virus type1. The Melissa extract in Herpilyn is highly concentrated: It takes 70 pounds of Melissa to produce 1 pound of the extract. Rather than any single antiviral chemical, the Melissa extract in the formula contains several components that work together to prevent the virus from infecting human cells.
When Lomaherpan Cream (the German brand name of the product) was used in patients with the initial herpes infection, studies at three German hospitals and a dermatology clinic found it to be very effective in preventing recurrences: In fact, not one of the patients in the study developed a second cold sore.
Furthermore, the cream promoted healing of the herpes blisters much quicker than normal. The control group receiving other topical creams had a healing period of 10 days while the group receiving Lomaherpan were completely healed within five days.
Lomaherpan Cream has also been tested in patients suffering from frequent cold sores. Researchers found that if they used Lomaherpanñ Cream regularly they would either stop having recurrences or experience a tremendous reduction in the frequency of recurrences (an average cold sore-free period of greater than 3 1/2 months).
Herpilyn, the U.S. version of Lomaherpan Cream, should be applied to the lips in a thick layer two to four times a day during an active recurrence. Based on detailed toxicology studies, it appears to be quite safe for long-term use.
Herpilyn is available at most health-food stores.
