Whole Foods – the myths and truth about!

(Sigh) Myths die hard, indeed. And if they stick around long enough, they seem to evolve into truths, and no thanks to TV, radio, and the like. I must have written a hundred million words around this item, but I can’t seem to write enough. So here’s more about whole foods and not only.

the truth about whole foods

At one of those frequent business meets where eats are almost indispensable, I ordered yet again one of my standard “juice and fruit” tandem. To this an associate, by now already accustomed to my diet preferences, commented, “If I were to eat only vegetables, I would probably have to eat at least five meals a day.” There you have it. One of the most common excuses man uses to cling to the flesh fare. For some strange reason, no doubt fed to us by the great White West through the greater envoys called media, more than many believe that if they were to only eat vegetables, they’d be too weak to live through the day.

Tell THAT to the elephant. Or to the hippo. Or to my better half, whose legendary strength and stamina may put Samson to shame (even with the hair). Or to children who work out two, sometimes three times a day, five, sometimes six days a week. Or to my indefatigably youngest who only gets tired when classes start, despite his bird-like eating habits.

The truth about Whole foods

Standard Pinoy foods are NOT healthy. The foods are greasy, overcooked, super-salty, super-sweet or all of the above. Moreover, they’re almost always calorie-rich, fat-filled, and fiber-void. Then there’s the ubiquitous soft drinks and other junk to cap off regular meals. If you apply the same descriptives even sans the meat, you still don’t minus the UNHEALTHY from the food.

… And the story goes on…Your body seeks the nutrients it urgently needs daily so you tend to eat more and more of the bad stuff. The bad stuff melts away quickly because of its fiber-free quality, and there you are. A victim of the vicious cycle of HUNGRY–PIG OUT–STUFFED UP then back to hungry. Eat this way and you’re guaranteed to feel weaker, and surely, sicker.

Therefore, keep in mind that you must consider the quality of the foods you eat, and not just the gender, so to speak. Vegetarian or not, they must be the least processed, the least refined, WHOLE, cooked just right, and best if ORGANIC. It may seem like a tall order, but don’t let a disease attack make you realize that HEALTH is WEALTH. Realize it NOW.

Here’s a list of some of the whole foods you must eat plenty of to keep up with the rigors of city living:

  • Whole grains (rice, oats, barley, wheat) – whole or in pasta, bread, or flour form
  • Fresh vegetables
  • Legumes (all kinds of beans)
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Lowfat or skimmed milk
  • Soymilk
  • Tofu
  • Lots n’ lots of fruits

Eating the RIGHT foods in the RIGHT quantity is the way to go to a healthier existence. Again and again, we go back to the ancient adage, don’t live to eat, but eat to live and be healthy! And when we say healthy, we mean in BODY, MIND, AND SOUL
