The need for blood is great and the requirements are few. However, not everyone can donate blood. To qualify, you must:
- Be at least 17 years old
- Be in good health
- Weigh at least 110 pounds
- Pass both the physical and health history examinations
- Have no evidence, by blood test, of infectious disease such as hepatitis or AIDS
If you do qualify and make a blood donation, your body will replenish the fluid lost within 24 hours. Yet it may take up to two months to replace the lost red blood cells. Whole blood can be donated once every eight weeks, as long as you continue to meet the criteria above. Disease cannot be passed to the donor giving blood.
